Features to Look for in Bird Feeders
Bird feeders are a thoughtful touch for feathered friends, whether domesticated pets or wild things. Feeders can store a good amount of seeds that birds can return to for feeding every now and then. These containers also keep seeds dry and fresh, protected from the sun, wind, rain, dew and snow. When buying bird feeders, here are some features to keep in mind:
Style
There are basically three styles of bird feeders sold at pet supplies stores today: the hopper, the satellite and the tube.
Hopper feeders come in a variety of styles, the most popular of which are the covered bridge and the barn. The seeds are protected on both sides with transparent acrylic panels so the amount of seeds can be viewed at any time. Birds can feed off the sides and from the bottom panel. Hoppers hold lots of seed, so there is no need to refill every day. These are also roomy, with a big enough space for a variety of birds to enjoy.
A satellite feeder is shaped like globes with a circular container underneath built with holes large enough for birds to fit in. Treats trickle down to a space underneath the globe so birds can get to them.
The tube style consists of a cylinder with small rods built around them to be used as perches. This is a favorite food station for birds such as woodpeckers, finches, nuthatches, siskins, chickadees and titmice. It is hung from a pole and birds can feed off from the tiny holes.
Ground or air?
Ground feeders are an excellent choice for a variety of birds such as doves, sparrows, cardinals, goldfinches and towhees. The feeding tray itself has a screen bottom that keeps the seeds a few inches from the ground. This style is recommended for areas where there is little threat from predators such as cats or dogs.
Hanging feeders are the choice in many areas since these provide birds with a relatively safer perch off the ground. These come in a wide variety of styles and sizes. They do require some effort to refill but they can be placed near areas such as the second story bedroom window to make it possible to enjoy the sight of birds feeding.
Security
Bird feeders store food, making these storage containers a prime target for other animals such as crows and squirrels. It would help to look for a feeder that has a wire mesh cover to discourage other ‘guests’ from partaking in the banquet. Some styles are also designed to keep other animals from the food, so it is a good idea to consider security features carefully.
Safety
Material safety is of utmost concern especially for birds. If there are parts made from wood, make sure these are weather-resistant and durable materials such as cedar, appropriately treated to protect against the elements. Metal reinforcements also help make the feeder sturdy and keep off other animals.
Feeders should also be easy to clean and maintain. Keep in mind that all that bird seed can and will rot, making it so easy for the container to become an ideal environment for mold and mildew to grow. Look for bird feeders that allow for easy, hygienic maintenance for your convenience and for the birds’ health.
